Central Government Mandates AIS 140 GPS TrackersBy: Sree Sai - Jun 11, 2019
What is AIS 140
The AIS 140 or the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is a set of requirements that the government has mandated to be put into place in all public transportation systems namely buses and taxis among others. The requirements have put an onus on not just OEMs but also aftermarket players to bring in a system that will improve safety critical parts in the Indian mobility. Each commercial vehicle (with yellow number plate) will have to install a real-time Navic/GPS monitoring scheme with emergency request buttons (panic/SOS buzzer) to comply with the AIS 140.
This was notified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) in a gazette notification that instructed all state governments to implement the requirements, equipping AIS 140 compliant GPS tracking equipment with supporting software for all passenger-carrying buses and other public transport cars as of 1 April 2018.
This date could not be met, however, as the required control and control centers were not in a location to monitor and track the cars. Accordingly, the government exempted all relevant cars registered until December 31, 2018, from installing trackers until fresh notification by another notification.
Zuppa is committed in their motive to improve the public transportation system, largely by improving its safety protocols by the immediate implementation of the AIS 140 GPS Devices on all public transport across the country. With GPS tracking systems authorized by AIS140, owners can monitor their cars' unauthorized movement; the device sends alerts to police and vehicle owners.
Apart from real-time data on a vehicle’s whereabouts, details present in the dashboard like ignition, battery power can be monitored via mobile application or through the provided website. The client will get the details through mobile and/or mail.
On the 28th of May, 2019, a two-day-long symposium held in Delhi earlier this month highlighted a huge new opportunity that has opened up for electronics B2B industry both hardware and software, in the field of GPS Navigation and GPS/GSM tracking for passenger cars as well as transport vehicles.
Organized by the Smart Mobility Association, the symposium ‘Smart Tech 2019’ saw participation by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of The Government of India, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of The Government of India, Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS) and etc.
A broad range of alternatives was on display, using GPS, its Indian version IRNSS, and GSM cellular telephony to monitor passenger cars as well as government and private vehicles — primarily for security, but also for better car effectiveness.
